The Kimeshek Headdress
in the Kazakh Collection of St. Petersburg's Kunstkamera

Abstract. The collection of the Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (the Kunstkamera), RAS, includes seven headdresses of married women, kimesheks, which originate from various regions of Kazakhstan and are dated to the late 19th — second half of the 20th century. The present paper aims to introduce these museum items into scholarly circulation as an ethnographic source and to identify the history and purpose of such headdresses in the traditional and present-day culture of the Kazakhs, based on comparative historical and semantic analysis.
