Shah Sulayman's Letter to His Aunt in the National Library of Russia

Abstract. The article introduces the Persian document included into the album of autographs, acquired by the Library from its owner and collector A. N. Andreev in 1859. In the album the document is described as “a letter from Shah Sulayman, son of Shah ‘Abbas II”. The text and translation of the document are provided and the reliability of attribution is discussed. The addressee of the letter is obviously Maryam Bigum (ca. 1049–50—1132 / 1640—1719), Sulayman's paternal aunt, who enjoyed great influence at the court of the late Safavids.

Keywords: archival documents, Safavids, ‘Abbas II, Sulayman, Sultan Husayn, Maryam Bigum
