Some Magical Practices in Muslim Ingush Healing Traditions

Abstract. The article examines the use of Muslim magical practices, specifically Qur’anic ones, for healing diseases in Ingush society. Based on the field materials, it can be stated that the Ingush use a complex of Islamic magical techniques to treat illnesses. Despite the ambivalent attitude of the Muslim clergy, Qur’anic texts play an important role and are an integral part of folk medicine. The text also analyses two objects with Arabic inscriptions used for treatment. Both objects contain the names of the Seven Sleepers, also known as “Companions of the Cave” or ashab al-kahf, and their dog, Qitmir. The latter is discussed in more detail.
