The MAE RAS Photo Collections as a Source of Information on the History of Textile Production in Japan in the Third Quarter of the 19th — First Quarter of the 20th Centuries

 

Abstract. For the first time the author studies the MAE RAS collection of photographs on Japanese culture and life as a source of information on the history of Japanese textile production. The article analyses commercial souvenir photography, as well as amateur and scientific photography from the point of view of their veracity and adequacy of representation of ethnographical realities. The author also gives some reference information on the history of the Japanese photographic collections of the museum.
