Istanbul by Alfred Eberling: Street Photography
Abstract. The article aims to present a part of Alfred Eberling's photographic legacy. In the years before the Russian Revolution, Eberling (1872—1951) was primarily known for his elegant portraits and drawings of beautiful women, as an artist who painted Grand Dukes and ballerinas. After the Revolution he painted portraits of Soviet leaders. The photos Eberling shot in 1898—1899 in Istanbul and Petersburg with his 1895 Pocket Kodak camera look amazingly present‑day. They seem to have been brought from the past by a time‑traveller. Alfred Eberling is undoubtedly a pioneer of the street photography genre in Russia.
