THE ARCHIVES OF E. M. SHILLING FROM THE COLLECTION OF THE STATE MUSEUM OF THE HISTORY OF RELIGION AS A SOURCE FOR THE STUDY OF RELIGIOSITY IN THE CAUCASUS REGION IN 1930S

Abstract. The article is aimed at reviewing the archival materials of the prominent Russian specialist in Caucasian studies Evgeniy Mikhailovich Shilling (1892—1953) that are currently stored in the Scientific and Historical Archive of the StateMuseum of the History of Religion. In total they represent a complete block of field observations made by the researcher during his trips to the Caucasus in 1929—1940. These observations were aimed at registering the current state of religiosity of the peoples of Dagestan, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Nagorny Karabakh. They also shed light on a new page of the life of this remarkable scholar connected to his collaboration with the Central Anti‑Religious Museum in Moscow, and to the period of his expeditionary activity — 1930s. Unlike his expeditionary period of 1940s, the previous decade of his activities has not become the subject of the thorough study till now.
