BOTANICAL DRAWINGS AS KEY TO UNDERSTANDING THE SCHOLARLY LIFE AND PERSONALITY OF THE OUTSTANDING JAPANESE NATURAL SCIENTIST UDAGAWA YOAN (1798—1846)
Abstract.For the first time, the article discusses the peculiarities of Udagawa Yoan's botanical drawings and their significance in the history of Japanese botany and botanical illustrations as well as sheds light on his scholarly life and personality. Moreover, it dwells on how the Western model of artistic and scientific depiction was perceived and implemented in Japan.
